What to do if your iPhone camera is not working

The iPhone boasts a great quality camera, and the built-in Camera app lets you use this lens to take some great photos. However, sometimes you may find that your iPhone camera is not working properly. This happens for many reasons.

Unless the camera is actually damaged, you can fix the problem with your iPhone camera using a variety of methods. There are both physical as well as software methods to get your iPhone camera back in working condition.

Make sure the camera lens is clear from any object

One basic thing to do when your iPhone camera is not working is to make sure no objects are placed in front of your camera. You may have accidentally placed something in front of your lens and that could cause the camera to not work or display a black screen.

Remove the object and also move the camera to another position and see if that works.

Close and reopen the camera app

There might be an issue with the built-in Camera app that’s preventing you from taking pictures. Quitting the app and then relaunching it should fix the problem in most cases.

Switch between front and rear camera

Sometimes, switching between the front and back cameras can fix problems with your iPhone’s camera. You can switch to the front camera and then quickly back to the back camera, or vice versa.

  1. Open Camera app on your iPhone.
  1. Tap the switch icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.

  2. Tap the switch again to return to the previous camera.

Restart your iPhone

When you have problems with any app on your iPhone, you should restart your iPhone to see if that fixes the problem. Restarting solves many minor software glitches on your iPhone and this can help you troubleshoot your camera.

  1. Press and hold Power in a few seconds.
  2. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone.

Use a flashlight to fix camera flash problems

If you’re having trouble with your iPhone’s camera flash not working, one way to fix the problem is to turn the flash on as a flashlight. This way you can verify if the physical part of the flash is working.

  1. Open Setting app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap the option that says Control Center.

  1. If the camera flash is on, it means that the physical part of the flash is working. If it doesn’t turn on, there’s a problem with your flash.

Bring back the missing camera app with time to use

If the Camera app has disappeared from your home screen, one reason is that it’s blocked in Screen Time. You or someone else may have restricted the use of Camera on your iPhone.

Changing an option in Screen Time brings the Camera app back to your home screen.

  1. Open Setting app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap the option that says Used Time.

  1. Your iPhone will ask you to enter a Screen Time passcode. Enter the passcode and it will let you in.

  1. You will see a list of allowed and blocked apps on your iPhone. Turn the side switch Camera arrive ABOVE Position. That will put the Camera app on the allowed apps list.

Turn off VoiceOver to fix the iPhone camera

VoiceOver is not directly related to your iPhone camera, but turning it off can help fix camera problems on your device. Remember that turning the feature off means you won’t be able to use it on your iPhone unless you turn it back on.

  1. Access Setting app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the option that says Shared on your screen.

Update your iOS version

You should update your operating system version. If your iPhone runs an older version of iOS, it’s time to update it to the latest version available. This can also fix the problem if your iPhone camera is not working

  1. Launch Setting app on your iPhone.
  2. Touch Shared right to buy.
  3. Touch Software updates option where to put your iOS updates.

  2. If a new version is available, press Download and install to install the update on your iPhone.
  3. Clap Automatic update and turn on the option so that your iPhone can automatically download and install newer updates whenever they become available.

If your iPhone camera is still not working, you may want to reset all settings on your phone. This will clear any misconfigured settings and fix the camera problem.

  1. Open Setting app on your iPhone.
  2. Touch Shared right to buy.

Finally, if nothing else works, take your iPhone to an Apple service center and let the support team take a look at your camera. They should be able to suggest how to troubleshoot the camera.
