How to Use the Memoji Feature on iPhone

Once upon a time a friend sent you an animated version of themselves animated with their real facial expressions via iMessage and wondered what this was. Apple decided to add Memoji and Animoji features to the iPhone X line of phones and newer versions of iOS

Then, when iOS 13 came out, it gave older iPhones the ability to create Memojis and use the Memoji sticker feature. However, to use Animoji, your iPhone needs to have Face ID. This is because these phones use TrueDepth cameras for Face ID and Animoji features. These are iPhone X and later phone models.

If your phone supports Memoji and Animoji, follow this guide to learn how to create them, how to use Memoji, and how to share them with friends.

Create your Memoji in iMessage

To create your Memoji, go to iMessage. Follow these steps to create your Memoji:

  1. Open iMessage, then create a new message or open an existing conversation.
  1. Look below the text field and find the Animoji or Memoji sticker icon. Click on one of them.

  1. Tap the blue plus icon on the left. Or if you’ve never used or created a Memoji before, you may be prompted to create one.

Move your face so your face is visible in front of your iPhone’s TrueDepth camera. Your Memoji will automatically be changed according to your features.

o through each creation option to change your Memoji the way you want. When you have it the way you want it, tap Accomplished. You’ll see your Memoji as an option for an Animoji or Memoji sticker.

Send your memos with Animoji

While in iMessage, tap the Animoji icon just below the text field. When it opens, you’ll see your created Memojis as well as some other emoji options you can use.

To create an Animoji, first make sure your iPhone’s camera can see your face.

Then tap Red record button and you’ll have 30 seconds to create an Animoji. You can make facial expressions and speak to form an expression.

Once done, you can either tap the red stop button or wait for the timeout.

Then you can tap blue up arrow to send your Animoji to the text chat you’re in. If you want to replay your Animoji before sending it, tap Playback in the top left corner.

You can also save your Animoji if you want to share it with others or on other platforms. Once you’ve sent your Animoji, tap it in your message. Then tap Blue share icon in the bottom left corner. You can click Save video to save it to your photo library and from there you can post it anywhere you want.

How to use Memoji Stickers

If you don’t have an iPhone X or later models, you might feel a bit left out. Don’t worry, you can use Memojis if you update your iPhone to iOS 13. Any phone that supports iOS 13 and has an A9 chip or later can use Memoji stickers.

First, open your iMessages and navigate to an existing chat or create a new one. In the text box you will see Memoji sticker icon.

Tap this and you can tap the blue plus sign to create a Memoji. Or, you can choose from other 3D emoji stickers available. Just tap one and you can send it.

How to use Memoji in FaceTime

Another way you can use your created Memoji is to replace your face with it during FaceTime calls. Or you can also use other emoticons. To use this feature, your iPhone needs a TrueDepth camera.

When you’re in a FaceTime call, tap Effect button. You will see Memojis that you can choose from. Tap one and make sure the camera can see your face. You will automatically see your face change in the selected Memoji.

When you’re done using the Memoji, tap Close button (X) stop using it.

How to edit your Memoji

Want to change a Memoji you’ve created? You have the option to edit any of them whenever you want.

Enter iMessage and open a chat. Tap the Animoji or Memoji sticker icon and select the Memoji you want to edit. Touch ellipsis iconand you will see options to Edit, Replicationor Delete Your Memoji.

Clap Edit to go to the Memoji creation screen, where you can select any feature you want to change. Once you’ve made all the changes you want, tap Accomplished and it will save your edited Memoji.

If you want a copy of the Memoji, tap Replication. You can further edit this copy and save the original.

Finally, tap Delete to remove the Memoji after you confirm that you wish to do so.

Use your Memoji on multiple devices

If you want, you can use your Memoji on various Apple devices that support the feature. For example, if you have an iPad Pro, you can use the same Memoji there as you use on your iPhone.

Just make sure you’re signed in to iCloud on your other devices with the same Apple ID that you created your original Memoji with. This way, the Memoji will be available on all devices signed in to the same Apple ID. Also, make sure that you have iCloud Drive turned on.

Then have fun making faces with your friends on any supported Apple device you own.
