How to use Conversation Booster on AirPods Pro

If you own AirPods Pro, you should explore the “Enhanced Conversations” feature. By the time you’re done reading this post, you’ll want to wear your AirPods 24/7—especially if you have mild hearing difficulties.

This post covers what AirPods Pro Conversation Boost does and how to enable it on your iPhone or iPad. We also include some AirPods Pro tips and tricks to improve the chat experience.

What is conversation enhancement on AirPods Pro?

AirPods Pro support noise cancellation mode and transparent noise control. Noise Canceling blocks outside noises and combats unwanted internal sounds (in your ears) with noise cancellation. Transparency mode does the opposite — it allows ambient sounds to enter your ears.

Conversation Boost is a customized form of transparency mode that improves live chats. The whole point of Conversation Boost is to help you hear people better while wearing AirPods Pro. When enabled, the AirPods Pro’s microphone will focus on the person directly in front of you.

Apple introduced the Conversation Boost feature with iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1. This feature is disabled by default, so you must enable it manually in your device’s accessibility settings.

How to use Conversation Booster on iPhone or iPad

Connect AirPods Pro to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and follow the steps below:

  1. Open Setting and press Accessibility.
  2. Scroll to the “Hearing” section and press Sound / Picture.
  3. Clap Room in headphones.
  1. Turn on Room in headphones.
  2. Scroll to the “Apply to” section and press Transparency mode.

If you don’t find Transparency Mode in this section, remove and reinsert the AirPods Pro into your ear and check again. You don’t have to wear both AirPods; Just an AirPod in your ear will do wonders.

  1. Turn on Custom transparency mode.
  2. Allow Enhance conversation.

Remember that Conversation Boost is a custom form of transparent noise control. Therefore, your AirPods Pro must be in Transparent mode to use this feature.

Open iPhone’s Control Center, press and hold Volume sliderclap Noise controland choose transparent.

Also, visit Setting > Bluetoothtouch information icon next to your AirPods and select transparent in the “Noise control” section.

Adjust Transparency Mode to improve conversation

“Conversation Boost” is a feature of AirPods Pro that enhances the voice of someone who is speaking directly to you. If the noise from the environment is louder than someone’s voice is speaking to you, reduce the noise level your AirPods absorb.

First, make sure the “Hearing” control is in the Control Center of your iPhone or iPad. Go Setting > Control Centerscroll to the “More controls” section and tap plus icon next to Hearing.

Then, put on your AirPods Pro, open your device’s Control Center and tap Hearing icon (or ear). Scroll down to the Hearing menu and make sure that Conversation Enhancement is Above. If not, press Enhance conversation to enable the feature. Next, pull Reduce ambient noise slider (right) to reduce background noise.

Reduce Amplification (drag the slider to the left) can also reduce background noise in Transparency Mode.

Conversation booster not working? 5 ways to fix

If you can’t activate or use AirPods Pro Conversation Boost on your device, these troubleshooting suggestions will help.

1. Use Original or Compatible AirPods (Pro)

Currently, Conversation Boost only works on AirPods Pro. That’s probably because it’s Apple’s only wireless earbuds that support Noise Canceling and Transparency modes.

AirPods Max also supports Noise Canceling and Transparency modes. However, the Conversation Boost feature is not available for headsets.

We should also mention that Conversation Boost will not work (correctly or at all) on fake or imitation AirPods Pro.

2. Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

Conversation Enhancement is available on iPhone and iPod Touch running iOS 15.1 or later. To use this feature on iPad, minimum iPadOS 15.1 or later is required.

You won’t find Conversation Boost in the audio accessibility settings if your device doesn’t meet the operating system requirements. If you have genuine AirPods Pro but can’t activate Conversation Boost, update your iPhone or iPad and check again.

Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, go to Setting > Shared > Software updates, and press Download and install.

3. Update AirPods Firmware

Conversation Boost may not work if your AirPods Pro are not running the latest firmware version. Refer to our guide on how to update AirPods to force update your AirPods Pro firmware version.

4. Adjust your AirPods Pro for a snug fit

The noise control features (Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes) work best when AirPods Pro fit your ears. Remove and reinsert the AirPods Pro into your earlobes and make sure they fit snugly (but comfortably). Engage someone in an actual conversation and test if Conversation Boost works.

Change your AirPods ear tips if you still don’t notice the Conversation Boost effect. The AirPods Pro come with medium-sized silicone ear tips and two different-sized sub-pairs in the packaging. If the pre-fixed tips are uncomfortable or loose, switch to larger (L) or smaller (S) earrings.

Then run the Earplug Fit Test to confirm whether the new tips are snug.

  1. Attach both AirPods to your ears and connect them to your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Setting application, select Bluetoothand click information icon next to your AirPods.
  3. Clap Check the fit of the earring.
  1. Clap Continue and click Play to start testing. Your iPhone or iPad will play some audio through the AirPods.
  2. Clap Accomplished if both (left and right) AirPods have “Good sealing” result.

If the test doesn’t find a good seal, re-adjust the loose AirPod(s) or try a different earbud. You may have to use different types of earrings depending on the structure or size of the earlobes. Refer to this Apple Support document for instructions on how to select, remove, and attach the ear tips on the AirPods Pro.

5. Clean your AirPods

Removing dirt, debris, and earwax from important AirPods components can make them sound louder and fix audio-related issues. Use a dry cotton swab or lint-free cloth to clean the AirPods Pro and the charging case.

Put the AirPods in your ear, enable Transparency mode, and check if the Conversation Starter works as expected.

Listen with AirPods support

Conversation Boost is designed for people with mild hearing impairment. However, people with perfect hearing can also use this feature for distraction-free chat. You no longer have to take off your AirPods to chat with someone. We’re confident that newer AirPods models will support Conversation Boost, so accessibility isn’t limited to AirPods Pro.
