How to middle click on macOS using a trackpad or Magic Mouse

When you switch from PC to Mac, you’ll soon notice that the Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, or MacBook’s built-in trackpad is missing a middle-click gesture. macOS has no built-in options or toggles to help with activation. This is amazing considering how effective middle clicks are when forcing a link to open in a new tab in the browser.

Therefore, if you want to emulate a middle click on a web page without pressing a command modifier key on your Mac, you should instead use third-party means to add functionality.

We’ve found several utilities that provide middle-click support for the Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, and MacBook’s built-in trackpad. One of them, Magic Utilities, also allows you to middle-click Apple’s pointing device on Windows.

MiddleClick is a free open source app that adds middle click support to your Magic Trackpad and MacBook trackpad. It’s also compatible with Magic Mouse, as long as you don’t mind tapping instead of clicking.

However, MiddleClick, unlike the other apps on this list, is limited to three-finger clicks or taps. All of these apps offer many customization options for adjusting the behavior of middle click gestures. MiddleClick requires a little time to set up. But again, it’s free and that’s important.

First, download the latest release of MiddleClick from Github. It should be included as a compressed ZIP file in your Mac’s download folder. Then extract MiddleClick.zip Drag the file MiddleClick.app In the file application Folder in the Finder sidebar.

While using the trackpad, clicking / tapping with three fingers also activates the Mac lookup feature, which can be distracting during a middle click. To disable Apple Go to the menu System Preferences >> >> Trackpad..under Point & click On the tab, clear the check box next to it Lookup and data detector..
