How to charge your Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is one of the most advanced wearables available, surpassing any Fitbit or smartwatch on the market. On average, an Apple Watch charge will last 18 hours. The charge will last through a standard day of heavy usage, but if you moderate your usage to just a few basic tasks — for example, check steps and text messages — you can have two days of use on a single charge.

There are several ways to charge your Apple Watch, but the easiest is to use the cable that came with your Apple Watch.

How to charge your Apple Watch

The basic white charger that comes with the watch has two faces: a flat side and an inward curved side. The face with the indentation is the face you want to attach to the back of the watch. Once aligned, the magnets snap both into place. As long as the charger is plugged into your computer or brick, the watch will start charging your Apple Watch right away.

You’ll know the watch has started charging because it will chime. If it’s in silent mode, you’ll see a flash of lightning appear on the front of the watch. This color will be either red or green, depending on how power the meter needs to be. In some cases, the lightning may not appear for several minutes until the watch is fully charged — in this case, you may see the Apple logo.

When you see this lightning bolt icon, all you have to do is wait. The watch is charging.

Charging time requirements

There are several ways to know the remaining charge time. On average, the Apple Watch takes two hours to fully charge. If you are in a hurry, it will take another 1.5 hours to charge 80%.

To check how much time is left, first look for the charging icon in the top left corner of the screen. It is like a progress bar and gives you a rough look at the distance along the charge. Alternatively, you can add a battery icon to the watch face, which will give you the actual percentage number rather than a bar with no numbers.

Charge your Apple Watch without a charger

You can charge your Apple Watch without using a standard charger. There are several third-party “stations” on the market that allow you to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch, and Airpods all in one place.

Although these devices are different, they all follow the same basic idea. Each person will have an area assigned to their device. Read the instructions provided and place your Watch on the appropriate charging dock.

If you don’t have the instructions, don’t worry. In most cases, the size difference between the three devices these stations can charge makes it obvious which one goes where. These stations are great for organizing all your gear in one place, but use caution when buying. Make sure that the station you purchase allows the correct power throughput for each device.
