Access region-locked games on iOS

There are millions of iOS users around the world, and mobile gaming has never been bigger. Developers are continuing to realize the huge potential that iOS apps bring, and new games are released in the App Store almost continuously.

However, from time to time you may notice that a title you are particularly interested in is not yet available in your area.

Developers typically present their games through a “soft launch” where they release their apps in smaller countries, where they can get a feel for how well the game is being received, and fix any issues before global release.

Countries like Canada, the Philippines, and New Zealand often get famous titles before the rest of the world because they have smaller populations that mostly speak English.

If you want to get your hands on the latest game and you can’t find it on your App Store, don’t worry, as it’s a relatively simple process to access region-locked games on iOS.

Create a new Apple ID

First, you will want launch iTunes on Mac or PC. Once the program is open, navigate to Shop navigation.

Scroll to the bottom of the Store window and Click on your country’s flag in the lower right corner.

Your country's flag is at the bottom right of the store

The next page has a list of all the countries where iTunes is available, so just select the region where your desired game is currently available.

Choose your country or region

If you’re looking for a region with a lot of low-cost releases in general, we recommend picking Canada, the Philippines, or New Zealand for good luck with future releases.

Once you have selected the country, create a new Apple ID. Just use any email that isn’t linked to an App Store account to create a brand new profile. You can access this menu by navigating to Account> Sign Out> Sign In> Create New Apple ID.

Create a new Apple ID menu after signing out of iTunes

Follow the prompts to create your new Apple ID and make sure you select “None” when prompted for a payment type.

At this point, Apple will ask you for personal information to link to the account. This part can get a little complicated as you will need to provide actual data that matches the country your Apple ID is associated with. The best way to do this is find the zip code in the area and use a random address in that area.

Since no payment information is associated with the account, the Apple ID creation process generally shouldn’t be too fussy as long as the information looks valid.

Once your new Apple ID is created, you can sign in on iTunes as usual, and you’ll be automatically redirected to your respective country’s app store.

Download region locked game

Once you’ve handled the Apple ID creation process on your computer, it’s time to go back to your iPhone or iPad. Tap Settings > iTunes & App Store > Sign Out.

Then you will simply Sign in with your brand new Apple ID! When you access the App Store on this new account, you’ll be able to find and download games that you were previously locked out of.

Once the game loads, you can even sign back in to your regular Apple ID to continue using your phone as normal.

The process mentioned above works well for free games, but it can get quite tricky if you’re looking to purchase paid apps or in-app purchases. Because you don’t actually live in the country of your new Apple ID, you won’t be able to make any purchases using your usual payment methods.

One way to get around this is to purchase an iTunes gift card from the country your Apple ID is associated with, but it’s a complicated but not without risk process as you’ll have to purchase through third party retailers.

Ultimately, this process is a great way to get a feel for the latest games before they launch in your country. Just keep in mind that paying on another country’s App Store is easier said than done. Interesting!
