The Mac isn’t exactly known as the best computer gaming console right now, but everyone likes to kill time or relax with a video game now and then. Gaming on Mac is better today than ever with storefronts like Steam, GoG, EGS, and Origin joining the Mac App Store on the platform.
You can also just install the game directly, just like any app. The only thing you need to do is pay. But there are also plenty of excellent free Mac games out there. Here are ten of the best free Mac games you can download right now.
Fortnite is phenomenal, a free-to-play battle royale shooter that seems to go from strength to strength. It is available on every platform (except iOS) and including macOS!
The basic premise of Fortnite is that a group of players are put into a single stage and then the last person standing wins. You can also team up, in which case your team should be the last one left. The battle royale formula was popularized by Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, which is a paid title, but Fortnite has become dominant and become a pop culture phenomenon.
Hearthstone is best played on the iPad in our opinion, but if you need a fix of Blizzard’s awesome and addictive card game, the macOS version is equally enjoyable.
Just like classic card games like Magic The Gathering, Hearthstone players assemble decks that represent creatures, objects, and other parts of the Warcraft universe. They then battle each other with said cards that can attack, defend, or affect play.
It’s an easy game to learn but hard to master, making for a great competitive scene. If you want to play at higher levels and ranks, you will need to spend money on booster packs. If you just want to play casually, the game is free as air.
While Dota (Defense of the Ancients) was the Warcraft III mod that launched the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre, it has since been surpassed by League of Legends.
LoL is probably the most popular eSports title in history and you don’t need to have a machine or any money in your pocket to play it. What you need is a lot of skill and patience for its learning curve
Not to be confused with the remastered and upgraded Cave Story +, which is a paid title. Cave Story is a classic indie game ported to most platforms.
That includes Mac, and you can download this awesome side-scrolling Metroidvania adventure right now just by visiting here.
Counter-Strike in its original form is an absolute phenomenon. While CS:GO doesn’t have much in common technologically with the original Half-Life mod, it has honed this formula into a razor blade.
CS:GO runs great on practically any hardware, it takes pure skill to get anywhere and shooting is frenetic and fun. It may not be the best-looking shooter out there, but you won’t even notice when trying not to get shot.
The original Dota mod for Warcraft 3 started the MOBA revolution, but today League of Legends is the big dog of the genre. That’s not to say you shouldn’t watch Dota 2 if you’re a fan of these games.
This official, professionally developed sequel is a bit more subtle and has its own character and feel. It doesn’t break LoL at all. If you are not tired of MOBAs, then this is a great alternative to the market leader.
You may have heard of a little game called World of Warcraft. It was quite popular at one point. OK, WoW is still pretty popular. There are usually about a quarter of a million players online at any given time. If you want to know all the trouble is going on, you can play for free until your character reaches level 20 in this classic MMORPG.
By then, you won’t have a problem paying a monthly subscription or you’ll know it’s not for you. Don’t blame us if you get too caught up in it!
The Asphalt arcade racing series is well-respected on mobile, but now you can take advantage of that fast-paced experience and move it straight to your Mac! Thanks to Apple’s Catalyst conversion system that makes it relatively easy to convert iOS games to macOS, Asphalt looks and runs great.
The gameplay of the game is also quite solid and unless you have no patience, you do not need to pay any money. At least not immediately.
While today’s Macs don’t have a great gaming reputation, Apple’s computers have an excellent gaming platform. Some of the best classic games have launched or appeared on their machines.
Beneath the Steel Sky is a classic point-and-click adventure on any platform, but thanks to Good Old Games, you can download and play it now on your Mac. What’s also exciting is that its modern sequel is available on Apple Arcade!
Then we have the Marathon Trio from Bungie. This was their original work long before Halo, but these games still have a lot to play with. In case you didn’t know, Halo will initially be a Mac exclusive, now you can see what Bungie cooked up not long before that epic game.
Never say that Mac doesn’t have games. From expensive triple-A titles to these great free Mac games, there’s no reason to get bored as long as you have your Mac with you. Feel free to add your suggestions to the list in the comments section below!
